Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
