The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
