Seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
