Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the prestigious trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

Yet, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the final moments to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
