In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty.
