Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
