European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
