A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
